Meet Larz Anderson

Forty-two years of fire experience. Thirty-one years in these mountains. One direct hit survived, and a lifetime of lessons to show for it.

Forty-two years in special effects fire work

Long before he ever inspected a home for wildfire risk, Larz spent four decades working with fire professionally in the special effects industry. That background gave him a technical understanding of fire behavior that most inspectors simply don’t have: how flames move, how heat radiates, how a fire can be controlled, redirected, or survived depending on the conditions around it.

Combine that with thirty-one years living in the Santa Monica Mountains, and you get an inspector who understands both the science of fire and the specific terrain, vegetation, and weather patterns that shape Very High Fire Hazard Zones across LA County.

A direct hit from the Palisades Fire

Larz stayed with his own home during the Palisades Fire and watched it take a direct hit and survive. It was not a theoretical exercise. He saw firsthand how fire creates its own weather patterns, and how embers can travel well ahead of the actual fire front, landing on roofs and in gutters long before the flames arrive.

“A real-world situation teaches you things no manual can. I know what preparation and resilience actually look like, because I’ve lived through it.”

That experience shapes every inspection Larz performs. He’s not working from a checklist alone. He’s looking at a property the way someone who has watched fire behave up close would look at it: where embers are likely to land, where radiant heat could reach, and where a structure’s real vulnerabilities are hiding.

I have the privilege of knowing and having Larz as my neighbor for thirty years. We live in fire zone 4, rated as the most extreme, and we both stayed and successfully defended our homes from the recent Pacific Palisades fire. Larz comes with years of experience prepping, developing a detailed wildfire protocol, and laying out the infrastructure to clear combustible materials and create defensible spaces. I am grateful to have this capable man of experience and knowledge right across the street from me.

I have known Larz personally for over twenty years, and in that time I have come to know him not only as a friend and neighbor but as someone whose professional knowledge and judgment I trust without reservation. When I set out to harden my own home against wildfire, Larz was the person I turned to, and he personally advised me throughout the process. He walked me through practical, effective home hardening techniques and was equally knowledgeable about brush clearance requirements, helping me understand the reasoning behind local defensible-space regulations so that the work we did actually reduced risk. Thanks to Larz’s guidance, my home was meaningfully better prepared for wildfire than it was before.
